It would take almost a year to cross Europe on foot from west to the east.īy eyeball, the longest distance one might think of as crossing Europe, a trek from Sagres, Portugal to a reasonable point in the middle of the Urals, is about 3300 miles. But the passing of time, and distances are a bit baffling to me. Tolkien was usually very careful with the details, paying a lot of attention to the smallest thing. Is the Middle-Earth so small? It would take almost a year to cross Europe on foot from west to the east. But we should consider the long period of rest in Rivendell and Lothlorien, which leaves us with around 4 months of travel. Frodo and Sam left Hobbiton on September 23rd (the same day Gandalf left from Rohan), while the destruction of the One Ring at Mt Doom took place on March 25th. It also did not take long for the Fellowship to get to Mordor (at least some of them). Ok, Shadowfax is lord of horses, so he could be supernaturally fast. I am not sure of the exact distance, but it looks like a really fast trip. If I am correct, Gandalf rides S'fax (Shadowfax) from Rohan (where he tamed the beast) to the Shire in 5 days!? (He started on September 23rd and reached the destination, correct me if I am wrong on September 28th). The thing that bothers me, however, is the size of the land.Īs from LOTR (especially Appendixes), for instance, it looks that Middle-Earth is not so big. Tolkien described the Middle-Earth in the great detail, in all its forms. There is something that bugs me for quite a while, and I think that this is the place where to get the answer. There are other Tolkien-themed subreddits out there! Say hello to our friends in the following places: We're looking at starting a wiki for these common ones. Try searching before posting a new thread: odds are we've already covered some of the "classic" questions ("Who is Tom Bombadil?", "What happened to the Blue Wizards?", "Why couldn't the Eagles just take the Ring?" etc).
